OGDEN RISING: Derelict Landmark and Seedy Flophouse Slated for Demolition

OGDEN RISING: Derelict Landmark and Seedy Flophouse Slated for Demolition

Ogden City recently took action that will make a dramatic change in the landscape.  City officials recently concluded the purchase of the Swift Building, the monolithic edifice that dominates the west end of the 24th Street viaduct.  The former slaughter house has been neglected for decades.  Yet, the area adjacent to the building has seen intense development recently and the acquisition by the city makes room for more development to occur.

The building also sits a stones throw away from the Ogden River kayak park which is currently underused due to some structural dysfunction.  The removal of the Swift Building will permit the park to be expanded and the river banks restored.

Another building that will be coming down soon is the Courtyard Inn located on the east side of the Bigalow Hotel.  This den of iniquity has been a drug and prostitution haven for years.  Given it’s close proximity to Historic 25th Street and unsavory patronage, razing this structure will do some good for the city center.

The use of space is changing for the better in Ogden City.  More great things are on the way!
