URBAN ARCHITECTURE: The Chicago Skyline
Published On: August 13, 2016 Posted by: Jeremy Peterson
I recently traveled to Chicago while on some Legislative business. While I was there, I took some time to appreciate the amazing architecture of downtown.
The Palmer House – Hilton
We stayed at the Palmer House located at Monroe and Wabash. It was constructed in the 1870’s and burned down a few days after in opened in the Great Chicago Fire. It was quickly rebuild with a different design and then remodeled into a giant 1.600 room building in the 1920s. In many ways, this hotel is a big daddy version of Ogden’s Ben Lomond Hotel which has a similar history (minus the burning down part).
Pieces of Utah
Well, the book is much better than the play.
Here, a piece of the Salt Lake Temple granite is embedded in the wall of the Chicago Sun-Times building along with pieces of many other places and buildings around the world.
The Magnificent Mile
The buildings along Michigan Ave. are amazing and rich in architecture.
Here is a familiar building name.
These structures look over Millennial Park to the East.
The Old Republic Building is a dignified edifice.
The Chicago Sun-Times Building is the gothic sttructure to the right. The clock tower building to the left is the Wrigley Building.
If you are looking for shopping, take a stroll down Michigan Ave.
The Bean
In Millennial Park there is this strange chrome covered oddity called The Bean. It’s a very cool piece of art.
Other Interesting Scenes
Our meetings were held at the convention center on the south end of downtown. It was an enormous structure.
This oddball structure on the way to Chinatown looks like communist block housing designed by George Jetson. But its just a retirement home.
This building houses the University Club of Chicago.
Whoops! I little foundation slippage in a high-rise means trouble.
The Willis Building (formerly Sears Tower).
Another old and stately edifice.
The entrance to Tribune Tower.
More offices north of Millennial Park.
The skyline as viewed off Navy Pier.
The city is beautiful at night.
This is the NBC Building.
Of course, fireworks make everything better.
Chicago is a beautiful city. There is so much more to explore about this amazing place.
