AirBnBust? Ogden Alters Vacation Rental Rules
Published On: August 20, 2024 Posted by: Jeremy Peterson
Vacation rentals are a controversial topic depending on the neighborhood you live in. It seems that this type of super temporary housing use is loved by its owners and sometimes loathed by its neighbors. With an AirBnB just a few doors from our home, I admit I have had to knock on the door of a loud guest at late hours once or twice. In conversation with city code inspectors, it seems that some vacation rentals in the city have even been used for nefarious purposes.
The concept of using non-hotel property for hotel-style use is maturing as it has entered the main stream. Cities have had to adapt their zoning regulations to consider the new use. Cities like Hurricane, UT have designated zones of their city specifically for vacation rental construction. Cities on like Ogden first instituted a few rules at the beginning and have observed how these spaces performed. With a few years of experience now, Ogden recently came out with some ordinance changes to bring vacation rentals in to harmony with city leaders vision for the community.
Here are the latest rules for vacation rentals in Ogden:

Note that vacation rentals in R-1 zones are prohibited unless they are owner occupied. This is a nod to all the neighbors out there who’ve had to deal with loud guests. For those of us living in higher density zones, we know what we signed up for.
Like all things government, jumping through the hoops of regulation can be both tedious and irksome. But, with vacation rentals offering untold riches and rent revenues to some, it seems to make sense for a lot of people.
