OGDEN RISING: Wonderblock and Cache Fargo

Two massive projects in Ogden City have been making slow but steady progress. The first is the Wonderblock project at the old Wonderbread site adjacent to the 2nd District Courthouse. The new parking garage has been an ever expanding monolithic presence on the site for some time. But, after months of tedious groundwork and preparations, improvements on the surrounding buildings are finally starting to manifest themselves as “gray shoots” springing up from the ground.

While the parking garage is an imposing unsightly structure, it will ultimately be obscured by a surrounding structure that will house apartments and commercial space.

The second big project happening in Ogden is hidden in plain sight: the Historic First Security Bank/Wells Fargo/Cache Valley Bank Building. For short, let’s just call it the Cache Fargo Building. The conspicuous Cache Valley Bank signage atop the building is ironic given that the bank’s nearest branch is in Layton. Perhaps this site was selected because it is the only building tall enough to see Cache Valley from Ogden.

Regardless, the community is grateful for them taking on this enormous project and being patient while doing so. The building attached to the tower has undergone significant changes since its purchase in 2021. The old facade was a 1980’s architectural confabulation with inverted tapering terraces.

This odd facade has been painstakingly removed and prepared for more appealing proportions.

Meanwhile, the south facing wall has metamorphed from a blank plaster surface to a highly windowed elevation.

Ogden’s transformation continues. Cache Valley Bank intends to open a branch here. We are exited for what the future has to offer. Great things are happening in Ogden!
